Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns technical team was sent into consternation when captain Ramahlwe Mphahlele pulled out of training.

According to the club’s website, Mphahlele suffered a quad strain and will be going in for a scan on Thursday.

There are fears that he is doubtful for the critical Telkom Knockout final against Kaizer Chiefs next week.

Sundowns’ medical team will be hoping the scan results come out positive - which is a most unlikely situation.

A quad strain is a tear in one of the quadriceps muscles at the front of the thigh, and can range from mild discomfort to a full tear on most of the muscle - resulting in severe pain and inability to walk.

Mphahlele participated in all the practice games Mamelodi Sundowns played last week - against FET College, Platinum Stars, and at the weekend, against Bloemfontein Celtic.

The injury would be a massive blow for coach Pitso Mosimane’s preparations for the TKO final, but with the depth that Sundowns has, it should not be insurmountable.
