Johannesburg - Former Orlando Pirates striker Benni McCarthy admits that he was shocked to hear about the departure of Kermit Erasmus who recently joined the French League 1 side Stade Rennais FC.

McCarthy sees the 25-year-old star’s move as a good export by the South African football fraternity and he has urged Erasmus to grab the opportunity with both hands.

“It came as a shock to me, I heard about it because I always keep tabs with the PSL and how my former team (Pirates) is doing," said McCarthy.

“That was a major shock to me when I heard about Kermit (Erasmus) departure, but it’s always great when a South African immigrates to Europe and play straight go straight into one of the best leagues in the world.

“Because it also adds more values to the South African football by having more players in European top leagues.

“It’s a positive move for him and hopefully he will grab the opportunity with both hands and also raise the South African flag high.

“That’s what we all want to see.”

The Port Elizabeth born player is yet to make his official debut for the French based outfit.
