Cape Town - Former Orlando Pirates defender Eugene Zwane has rubbished suggestions that the Sea Robbers need to reinforce their defence in the January transfer window.

Zwane believes Pirates have enough top quality players in defence to compete in the Premiership but the technical team needed to stick to a consistent back-line.

Coach Eric Tinkler has been reshuffled his defence on numerous occasions due to injuries to key players.

"Pirates have not had a consistent back-four," Zwane told Goal website.

"Firstly, because they have been playing in Africa and they had Felipe Ovono registered in Africa and Brighton Mhlongo injured and when it came to domestic games they preferred Siyabonga Mpontshane in goal because he wasn't participating in Africa.

"So, they were not able to have a consistent keeper in goal.

"Now, the same thing applies with the defence; in different stages you had Happy Jele out, Thabo Matlaba out, Siyabonga Sangweni out and Rooi Mahamutsa.

"So, it's been very, very difficult, and unfortunately with defences you have to build a solid back-four that understands each other."
