Cape Town - Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids believes the club should start setting higher targets for themselves following their impressive 1-0 over Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 on the weekend.

At the start of every season, the small Midlands club set themselves the goal of finishing in the top eight in the league. And, after achieving that in the previous campaign, Davids believes they should set themselves loftier ambitions.

"I've said it to the chairman that we have to aim higher and try our best to achieve our targets," he was quoted by the SowetanLIVE website.

"He (Kadodia) said he wants us to achieve top five in the next three years, but I think in the next three years we have to be in the top eight consistently," said the club's former captain.

After achieving a top eight for the first time ever in their history under Steve Komphela, The Team of Choice struggled the following season, where they found themselves rooted to the foot of the league table until the final 10 minutes of their final game.

The final day heroics of the 2015/16 season pushed them in 2016/17 where a number of impressive results saw them achieve their highest ever position in the league as they finished in seventh.

And, with Davids now confirmed as the club's permanent head coach, the team started 2017/18 in much better fashion, by eliminating African champions Mamelodi Sundowns from the MTN8.

"I think the match (against Sundowns) gave us a lot of information to start the league and I think we will be much better prepared," said Davids.

United start the new season against Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Sunday.
