Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns won the CAF Champions League final on Sunday when they defeated Egyptian giants Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate.
An estimated 60 000 predominantly Zamalek supporters were packed inside the Borg El Arab Stadium on the outskirts of Alexandria as the match kicked off.
The home side faced a mammoth task needing to score at least three or more goals, which proved too much for Zamalek, who could only score one goal in the 64th minute off the boot of Stanley Ohawuchi.
Despite losing the second-leg match in Alexandria 1-0, it was enough to ensure the Brazilians their first CAF Champions League trophy.
Success for Sundowns made them $1.5 million richer and secured a place at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan during December.
Sundowns are expected to return to South Africa on Wednesday, October 26.
