Johannesburg - Mamelodi Sundowns striker Percy Tau is poised to make a clean sweep of the annual Premier Soccer League awards.

Everyone’s eyes are on the players who are likely to receive recognition for their outstanding form, and the pint-sized Tau is in the running for the major gongs.

With the league drawing to a close, Tau continues to be an outstanding performer and a prime candidate for the Golden Boot award.

Before this weekend’s round of matches, he and Polokwane City’s Rodney Ramagalela were sitting on 11 goals each.

Tau is set to follow in the footsteps of former Cape Town City striker Lebogang Manyama, who walked away with the top scorer, footballer and players’ player awards last season.

Last year, Manyama was signed to Konyaspor in Turkey.

But the modest Tau is reluctant to count his chickens before they hatch.

“Sometimes you work so hard that you find yourself in a situation you never thought you would be in,” said the Bafana Bafana player.

“You just have to keep going because some awards mean a lot to other people. If things go my way, I would like to continue with the good run I have had. I will see what happens at the end of the season. It’s not something I think about a lot,” he said.

“I was almost in a similar position last season. [The awards] do not represent the whole season, nor all the progress I have made. If I don’t win any [awards], I will still look at the numbers and realise they were better than last season. For me, it is all about improving.”

When he was asked whether he would go overseas to sharpen his skills, Tau said his focus was on playing for Sundowns.

Rumour has it that French scouts were in the country to watch him play against Cape Town City and Chippa United.

However, Tau said that he hadn’t heard anything about the scouts.

“I don’t know anything about that. If they [Sundowns] want to keep me, I will still be here [next season].”

Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane said that Tau had no competition in the individual achievement categories.

After second-placed Orlando Pirates lost against SuperSport United on Wednesday, Sundowns look like they are running away with the title.
