Themba Zwane celebrates scoring for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Themba Zwane scored a hat-trick in the first half as Mamelodi Sundowns beat Amazulu 4-3 in an entertaining DStv Premiership clash at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The win moves Sundowns to the top of the league table with the defending champions having now taken 10 points from a possible 12 this season.

Zwane struck his treble in 11 first-half minutes in what was one of the quickest hat-tricks in league football in South Africa.

Last season's PSL Footballer of the Year certainly showed why he is regarded as the best player plying his trade in South African football at the moment.

Zwane, who scored twice for Bafana Bafana in their 4-2 victory over São Tomé and Príncipe on Monday, found the back of the net in the 19th, 21st and 30th minutes of the encounter.

The attacking midfielder put Sundowns 3-1 ahead after Lehlohonolo Majoro had opened the scoring for Amazulu after 15 minutes.

The Usuthu forward took advantage of a poor back pass from defender Ricardo Nascimento to intercept and score past Kennedy Mweene. Masandawana were level when Zwane combined with forward Peter Shalulile in a quick exchange of passes before firing past Siyabonga Mbatha in the Amazulu goal.

The hosts took the lead just two minutes later when Zwane struck a beautiful curling effort that gave Mbatha no chance of saving.

The Bafana midfielder completed his hat-trick on the half-hour mark when he latched onto a pass from Kermit Erasmus to make it 3-1.

The visitors pulled a goal back just two minutes after the halftime interval when Luvuyo Memela scored from the follow-up after seeing his penalty saved by Mweene.

Shalulile though restored Sundowns' two-goal lead in the 56th minute when the forward connected with a header from a Lyle Lakay corner.

Usuthu though never gave up the fight and were back in the contest on the hour mark when defender Sandile Khumalo towered above the Sundowns defence to head past Mweene from a set-piece.

Both teams had chances towards the end of the game but the score remained In Sundowns’ favour.
