Cape Town - Gavin Hunt has labelled Bidvest Wits' 1-0 victory against Chippa United in the Premiership as their worst performance of the season, but insists they cannot always play quality football.

The Clever Boys top the Premiership standings following Gabadinho Mhango's solitary strike against the Chilli Boys - having not conceded defeat in their opening six league matches, collecting 16 points out of a possible 18.

Despite garnering all three points on offer, the former SuperSport United mentor wasn't too happy with his team's performance.

"You look at any team that wins the league - they’re certainly not going to play beautiful football the whole year through," he told Times Live.

"Especially in our case - where our last home (league) game was in August, two months ago.

"People psychologically don’t understand what we’ve done. It’s difficult because you’re not coming to your own patch - you’re not sitting on your own seat - you’re not playing on your own grass.

"The grass here is thick and heavy and it doesn’t suit us. The ball couldn’t move tonight."

The Braamfontein outfit were forced to move the venue of their game to the Dobsonville stadium, due disruptions caused by the 'Fees Must Fall' protests.

"We’ve got to get back home as soon as possible," Hunt added.

"It wasn’t a good performance - certainly in the first-half - the second-half was much better. We changed and pressed them high.

"It was the worst performance we’ve had this season, but it’s important we get the three points.

"In the second-half, against the wind they were going to play from the back.

"And in the first-half, they played from the back too easily," he concluded.

Wits next fixture will be against Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership fixture on Saturday, November 24.

Kick off is at 20:15.
