Cape Town - Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has backed his table-topping side to go from strength to strength and claim the Premiership title this season.

The Clever Boys finished the first half of the campaign at the summit of the league ladder, having picked up 26 points from their opening 12 fixtures.

Hunt's men return to action on Sunday afternoon when they take on ninth-placed Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

"Obviously I consider ourselves as title contenders - I mean we're sitting pretty at the top with 26 points and we got ourselves into that position," Hunt told the club's official website.

"When we start playing in January, February, in the CAF and Nedbank, our squad will get better.

"We just need mileage in our legs and to play. You saw the last time when we played three in a row and we have won them all.

"By the third game we were flying. So that is all I think we need.

"So going back to the question if we should be considered as serious contenders - Ja, why not?"

He added: "I've been in this situation many times and I know what takes. It's certainly going take hard work.

"There is going to be games where you have try and grind out results. It's not going be pretty, but who said it's going to be pretty?

"It's about the two p's: played and points - not about anything else. What goes in between doesn't matter.

"If you say we've played well against Chiefs - how many points did we get? None. So, that's the bottom line."
