Pietermaritzburg - Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula on Sunday expressed shock at the death of Premier Soccer League  player Mondli Cele following a car crash in Pietermaritzburg.

“Road accidents rob us of our future and Cele is one out of many examples,” he said in a statement.

“I watched him play Saturday as he landed the opening goal leading his club to a 3-3 draw with Orlando Pirates.

“I did not know I was watching him play for the last time.”

The Maritzburg United player was killed, along with a woman, after their car rolled down an embankment and into the Duzi river in the Alexandra Park area on Sunday morning,

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said bystanders and paramedics removed Cele from the scene. Despite resuscitation efforts, the 27-year-old later died in hospital.

One female occupant of the vehicle was found dead on the scene.  Two other women, who were also travelling in the car, managed to get out of the submerged vehicle. They were taken to hospital for further care.

The cause of the accident is not yet known.

Mbalula extended his condolences to Cele’s family and soccer club.

“May they find solace in knowing they share the loss of such young talent with all football-loving South Africans.”
