Johnson pleased with Usuthu's character

Cape Town - AmaZulu coach Cavin Johnson feels confident that his group of players have the ingredients to go on and enjoy a successful season.

The Durban club returned to the top flight after a three-year absence when they bought the franchise of Thanda Royal Zulu ahead of the current campaign.

Johnson, also in his first season with Usuthu, has had to quickly mould together a squad which was majorly overhauled from the previous campaign.

And they have made a solid start to life in the top-flight, the KwaZulu-Natal side currently in ninth position, just five points off the summit.

Johnson's side could well have been higher up the table had they been more clinical against Kaizer Chiefs in a 0-0 draw in Durban on Wednesday.

"We should have done better in the opening half with our chances. In the first half I thought we had Chiefs against the wall," he said. "If you look at it I think we did score a goal.

"I think (Itumeleng) Khune took it from [behind] the [goal-line] from Phumlani Gumede's shot, but from where I stand it looked like it was from behind the goals but the goal was not given.

"I thought the boys did a really good job," he added.

Looking at the overall picture of his side, the Usuthu mentor is upbeat; "We are happy with the boys' performance. We are building the team. We can see it is going somewhere.

"There is a lot of effort from the youngsters, those that haven't played in the PSL yet. There is a lot of tenacity and ability to go forward and create chances for ourselves."
