Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs vice-captain Willard Katsande says the club are capable of finishing higher than seventh and will strive to do so to prove critics wrong.

Chiefs have been the subject of plenty of gentle ribbing in recent weeks for seemingly remaining locked in seventh position in the Premiership standings.

While it seems a place in the top eight is not in doubt, opposition fans have been mocking the team on social media in particular for staying rooted in seventh.

Several memes are circulating of popular South African television series 7de Laan in which the faces of officials and players of the club are edited into the faces of the pictures of the actors.

Katsande said: "Yes, you hear people are making fun of us, but at the end of the day it's very painful because this is a big team to be stuck in seventh position.

"But who knows who might have the last laugh? We never know what tomorrow holds for us, so for now we lick our wounds with everything thrown at us.

"We are a dying flower, you can throw dirt on us, it's a vitamin D, but you never know what tomorrow holds when the sunshine comes, my flower can blossom. So, I think we're going to have the last laugh, trust me."

The Glamour Boys are next in action on Saturday when they face Free State Stars in the league at the Mbombela Stadium.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
