Cape Town - Former South Africa captain Mbulelo 'OJ' Mabizela has revealed his regret over disciplinary problems which stifled his career potential.

Mabizela rose to stardom in the early 2000s, becoming Bafana's youngest captain in 2003, aged just 22.

That same year, he signed for Tottenham Hotspur from Orlando Pirates, but was released following several disciplinary issues.

His ill-discipline followed him into his stint at Mamelodi Sundowns and cost him a place in Carlos Alberto Parreira's 2010 World Cup squad on home soil.

"I got all the support that I needed overseas, I won't lie. I had my mistakes, I am only human after all," the recently retired Mabizela told SAfm.

"The honest truth is I was ill-disciplined and it has cost me not only in Europe but also around SA.

"My discipline has always been an issue - I can't run away from it, it is the honest truth.

"There was a lot that happened, a lot was expected and I didn't live up to the expectations."
