Cape Town - Bidvest Wits have been dealt a major blow with news Phakamani Mahlambi will be ruled out for the rest of the campaign after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 18-year old forward's setback will no doubt be a huge loss to the Students and the South Africa national team, as he was set to be an integral part of the Bafana Bafana Under-23 squad that will participate in the Rio Olympics later this year.

Mahlambi was absent during Wits' 2-1 victory over Maritzburg United on Wednesday, with Hunt confirming the former School of Excellence strikerd had suffered an injury in their Tshwane derby with the University of Pretoria.

"Mahlambi won't play in the Olympics as he tore his knee," Hunt confirmed in the post-match interview.

"It's nine months out as it's an ACL.

"This year I lost Papi Faty; my best midfielder and now it is Mahlambi."

Mahlambi has been ever present in the Wits line-up in his debut season in the Premiership; winning the Player of the Month awards in November and December.
