Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka acknowledges his career has taken a backward step after starring for the club last season.

The 26-year-old helped Amakhosi win the Premiership title and the MTN8 trophy in 2014/15, making 21 starts in all competitions.

But Maluleka has struggled to establish himself in the first team under new coach Steve Komphela, starting just twice in the league and making another nine appearances off the bench.

The South Africa international admits his progress is not going as he'd hoped and he intends to knuckle down and win back his place in the starting line-up.

Asked whether he felt his current situation was a step backwards, Maluleka told Soccer Laduma: "I can say so. Every player wants to continue playing after a good season, but what I should do now is continue working hard and use every chance that the coach gives me.

"Everyone is given a chance and it's how you use it that matters. I want to play for the national team, but that has to start with my good form at club level.

"I haven't given up on that and I know if I do well for Chiefs, my chance to play for Bafana is still there."
