Maponyane: Players are to be blamed not Steve

Cape Town - Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Marks Maponyane insists that their current squad must take responsibility for their performances on the field after yet another defeat on Tuesday.

The Amakhosi suffered their fourth straight loss in all competitions when they went down 1-0 to Jomo Cosmos in midweek.

The bad run of results has seen coach Steve Khompela come under increasing pressure from Chiefs' supporters, with some suggesting he should be relieved of his duties.

A prolific striker for the Amakhosi in the early nineties, Maponyane though says Khompela inherited a team at the start of the season that needed drastic changes.

"I said it before that Steve inherited a team that needed to be overhauled. The problems at the club go back to that Telkom Knockout final where they lost 3-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns," he told Goal website.

"If you remember in that match, two players missed penalties but still the blame was on Steve. For me, the players are not doing enough and should man up and take responsibility.

"Why should a coach always take the blame when the players are not performing? Look at the game against Jomo Cosmos last night, Chiefs players had more chances but Cosmos had one and it ended in the back of the net.

"What a beautiful goal by the way. The Chiefs players should do more for the team because their careers are also at stake."
