Maritzburg United take on Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in a Premiership six-pointer at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday.
Both sides are in serious trouble of relegation this season, with the Team of Choice in 14th place with nine points from 14 games, and TTM in 15th place, also with nine points but with a worse goal-difference - and both clubs level with bottom-placed Black Leopards.
While Maritzburg replaced Eric Tinkler with Ernst Middendorp early into their campaign, TTM are still chopping and changing, with Dylan Kerr reportedly set to take over from Joel Masutha in the coming days.
Middendorp's side have not won in the league in four games but come into this tie on the back of a morale-boosting 2-1 Nedbank Cup Last 32 win over Sekhukhune United.
TTM also won their cup clash, defeating an in-form SuperSport United 1-0 in a massive result for the club, having lost their last five league games.
Ahead of the tie, Maritzburg striker Thabiso Kutumela told his club's website: "I think the cup win will help us.
"We lost three games in a row in the Premiership (before that) and this cup win is going to help us to boost our morale to go into the league game that is coming on Friday."
"We've been working hard since the cup win - we didn't say, 'let's wait for Friday and get some rest', we just carried on working har from Monday and we can see progress to go forward to the TTM game.
"TTM have not been good like us. But they won in the cup game against SuperSport United, so its going to be a tough one because they are motivated."
TTM midfielder Miguel Timm, who previously played for Maritzburg, added on SuperSport: "Very important match, at the bottom you look to latch onto anything that brings some sort of positivity and hope to the situation.
"It’s always going to be special. I felt very at home there [in Pietermaritzburg] and have a lot of close relationships with the staff and players.
"I conduct and apply myself in a professional manner on and off the field, so I can play regularly with confidence knowing I'm well prepared physically and physiologically, regardless of external factors beyond my control."
