Cape Town - Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has expressed sympathy for Ayanda Patosi amid questions over his weight, as he experienced the same as a player.

However, now that he is a coach, the former FC Porto striker feels he can finally afford to stop worrying about the size of his own stomach.

"It is a process and we will take it bit by bit," said McCarthy of helping Patosi deal with his weight, according to TimesLIVE.

"It is not going to happen overnight, of all these people I should know better because I have been there.

"But now I don't care if people criticise me for my belly because I am a coach, and if you look at 90% of the coaches in the league, they have big stomachs - so I fit in like a glove."

McCarthy is hoping to use the international break to help Patosi get back to his ideal weight and has warned the rest of the Premiership to watch out for him once he reaches full fitness.

"His qualities are undoubted but it is going to be a tough road ahead for him," the former Blackburn Rovers frontman said.

"You need a strong will and to make the sacrifices.

"But this break comes at the right time so that I can work on a few things and really hammer the boys into shape.

"I think he is a work in progress and he is making good strides.

"If together with the fitness trainers and medical team we manage to get him in the right shape, we are going to see one of the best South African players."
