Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise says regular participation in competitions like the FIFA Club World Cup would 'sky rocket' the Premiership's image.

Sundowns were knocked out of the 2016 Club World Cup at the first stage after losing 2-0 to Kashimi Antlers in Osaka, Japan, on Sunday.

The African champions dominated the first half but could not find the back of the net, with the Japanese champions storming back in the second half to score twice.

"Look it was sad that we lost. We obviously did not want to come here and lose. We played against a good team that deserves to be here as much as we do. Luck was just not on our side with the game being of two halves," the former Bafana Bafana midfielder stated on his official website.

Despite the defeat, Modise, who did not feature in Sunday's game, believes participation at the tournament will have enhanced the reputation of the South African club and its players.

"They got chances and they scored and that is football at the end of the day. But I believe that the experience will go a long way in giving the players and the technical staff credit in their CV's.

"Not only that but this may also show all South Africans that a lot is possible if we work hard and believe.

"Can you imagine if this was something all the PSL teams constantly participate in year in and out? It would sky rocket the value of our league and quality of football in our country. This is a learning curve for all of us," he added.
