Johannesburg - Fuming Free State Stars boss Mike Mokoena has vowed to sue whoever is spreading the rumour that his club is up for sale.

Mokoena told City Press that the rumours were affecting the club’s plans for the new season as they could not attract some players.

“Someone, somewhere is malicious and spreading this propaganda about us. I want to take them to the cleaners because I’m tired of defending myself against these baseless rumours. I want to know their motive because this is not good for us. The fact is that we are not for sale,” said an incensed Mokoena.

“I am really disturbed by the continuous rumours. I think someone is playing a dirty game with us.

“I have never mentioned selling to anyone. Selling is not on our agenda, especially this year. The Free State government has just given us   R2 million and the premier is putting a task team together to help us get a sponsor. And now this,” said Mokoena.

Hit a brick wall

Reports suggested earlier that the wealthy Mpisane family in Durban were in the final stages of a multimillion rand deal that could see them complete the purchase of Stars.

Mokoena said the rumours were hurting and damaging the brand.

He said they wanted to build a formidable side that would compete for titles next season.

Unfortunately, he said that they had hit a brick wall with some players they wanted to sign for next season.

“We have identified a few players to bolster our side, but some of them are reluctant to come to us. They have told us they can’t because the club will be sold soon – and this is not true”.

The club is talking to potential sponsors and will reveal its plans for the new season soon.
