Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane has insisted that the Christmas break is not to blame for their current ill fortune in the Absa Premiership.

After holding a big lead over second place in the league table, the Brazilians lost their last game of 2017 and first one in 2018 which saw the gap cut down to just a point.

After being beaten 3-2 by Polokwane City on Saturday, Mosimane stressed that the mid-season break had nothing to with their slip-ups.

"Two different halves in terms of opportunities. Two goals in one minute - it's football," he was quoted as saying by TimesLIVE website on Monday.

"They wanted it more than us. They were hungrier. We can't blame the break because they also had the same break. But we are not yet back from the break."

Mosimane's side will have a chance to rectify their season on Tuesday when they travel to the Mother City to take on the struggling Ajax Cape Town.

Kick-off is at 19:30.
