Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns may have finished with fewer trophies in the cabinet than last season, but coach Pitso Mosimane has praised his players for their efforts.

The Brazilians became the second South Africa team to win the CAF Champions League last year, and the defence of their continental crown will mean that Mosimane's side will barely have an off-seaon.

"I have to congratulate the boys for their positive attitude," Mosimane was quoted as saying by Goal.com website.

"They put their bodies on the line. Secondly, it is to congratulate the Yellow Nation (the club's fans) that always sings. They threw the vuvuzela away."

Their efforts on the continental front meant that Sundowns fell behind in their league schedule, and had to make up for lost time during the second half of the campaign, and it's something that Mosimane felt hampered their chances of retaining the title.

"The worst part was playing four games in six days, the time we played Chippa United and went to Cape Town City," he continued.

"The 2016/17 season was fantastic for us and I will tell you why. We won the grand slam - (CAF) Champions League and Super Cup. Okay, we lost to Wits in the MTN8 and the title. Congratulations to Wits."
