Cape Town - AmaZulu veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvethe says he has never been involved in a more competitive Absa Premiership campaign than the current one.

Nomvethe made his top-flight football debut for African Wanderers in 1997 and has featured for Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows over the years.

At the age of 40, he is the most experienced player in the league and believes the tight nature of the competition this seasons is good for South African football.

“Everyone is up for it. You win today you lose the following week, Nomvethe explained.

“It is a big challenge. The 16 teams are doing well. It is not easy to just beat anyone because everyone is working hard.”

Usuthu are currently in 13th on the league table just three points away from the relegation zone. However, with 27 points to their name they are also two points adrift of Bidvest Wits who round off the top eight.

The PSL's all-time leading goal scorer has also spent time in Italy, Sweden and Denmark. Only once in his time abroad does he recall a similar situation. Back in 2005 Nomvethe was part of the Swedish outfit Djurgarden which went on to win the league.

“I have never seen such a tight season in South Africa. It happened in Sweden when we won the league by four points. When you win, you think you are gone but you are not gone because the other teams are coming,” he said.

AmaZulu are busy preparing for a league assignment with Kaizer Chiefs at FNB this weekend.

A win against the Amakhosi will take them within five points of Steve Komphela’s side.

“At the bottom people are coming so we cannot relax. We just have to keep working hard so we keep maintaining our standards,” Nomvethe concluded.
