Orlando Pirates played to a goalless draw in their opening CAF Confederation Cup group stage clash against ES Setif at the Accra Sports stadium in Ghana on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers would be the happier to take a point from their Algerian opponents as it was a designated 'home' fixture for the North African club.

The game was moved to a neutral venue in Ghana by Caf because of visa complications due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Setif had the first effort on goal in the sixth minute but a brilliant goal-line clearance from Siphesihle Ndlovu denied the Algerians taking the lead.

Pirates then suffered an injury blow when goalkeeper Richard Ofori was stretchered off with what looked like a groin injury in the 14th minute and replaced by Siyabonga Mpontshane.

On the half-hour mark Happy Jele rose highest in the Setif penalty area but could only head over the bar from a Dean Hotto set-piece.

In first-half stoppage time Vincent Pule weaved his way past a few defenders but shot wide when he had done all the hard work.

Fortune Makaringe had the first goal-bound opportunity after the break but he again let down by poor finishing as he hooked his effort wide.

Pirates seemed to be getting stronger as the match came to it's latter stages with Pule prominent, but the winger fluffed two more opportunities late in the contest as the game finished goalless.

Buccaneers and Setif sit two points behind Enyimba after the first round of fixtures in the group after the Nigerian club beat Libyan side Al Ahli Benghazi 2-1 earlier in the day.
