Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs stalwarts Bernard Parker and Willard Katsande spoke of their delight after the triumphant Soweto Derby day at the FNB Stadium.

While the national spectacle in front of a capacity 87 243 fans was marred by the tragic death of two fans during a stampede at Gate J on the day, the game was allowed to go on with Chiefs securing the bragging rights with a 1-0 victory.

Parker's seventh minute strike proved to be the difference between the two sides, and the South Africa international feels their level of performance is an indication of how 'solid' they will be this upcoming season.

"It was a boost for us on the field and I’m happy that we came out with a win," he said after the game.

"With my frontline, we created a lot of chances, we tried to break quick and we did, but as we got into the final third we can be a little bit more ruthless, just 10 percent more and we would coem out with a lot of goals.

"But other than that, it’s a learning curve for us, we are looking good and looking solid. This year we want to achieve our goals."

While Parker raved about the cohesion of his teammates, Katsande was full of praise for the lucky fan who earned the chance to manage the Glamour Boys for the unique experience of the Carling Black Label Cup.

"We know the culture of these derby games, it's not easy games but it was about us to check how far we are in terms of our preparation. I think we headed in the right direction, " the Zimbabwe international said.

"The coach we had this time around was quite confident. I've been listening to his interviews. I watched Sport at 10, he was so calm and he understands the game."
