Cape Town - Bidvest Wits attacking midfielder Steven Pienaar believes some South African footballers get rewards too easily in the Premiership, and should make more sacrifices abroad.

The 35-year-old, who enjoyed a glittering career in Europe for the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Ajax Amsterdam, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, signed for the Clever Boys after an unsuccessful spell with Sunderland in the English Premier League.

The former Bafana Bafana captain made just 10 appearances for the Black Cats as he struggled with a host of niggling injuries. The club were eventually relegated at the end of 2016/17.

Nonetheless, 'Schillo' says that some local players don't sacrifice enough to make it big in some of best leagues in the world.

"From a personal experience, you look back at where you come from and where you want to go. To me, it was clear I wanted to achieve things in my career," he told reporters.

"You look at your life and that of your family. What are you going to do back at home? Drive around, go to the malls and chill?

"Most of the young players who get opportunities to go to Europe go there for two seasons and come back because I think many of them are spoiled in South Africa and they get everything easy."
