Cape Town - Orlando Pirates are bidding to try and sign Mamelodi Sundowns' attacking midfielder Khama Billiat, according to a report.

Billiat is currently in the last six months of his contract with the Brazilians and can open negotiations with any club for a pre-contract or a straight deal.

The 26-year-old has been the subject of much speculation regarding his future throughout the season and was recently linked with a move to Azerbaijan champions FK Qarabag.

However, Billiat could potentially stay in South Africa and according to the KickOff website, Pirates are interested in offering the Zimbabwean a lucrative deal should he opt to become a Buccaneer.

"Pirates have been talking to the player's representative," said a source.

"The first offer was rejected. They have made another offer."

The Buccaneers are willing to increase Billiat's salary from R160 000 a month to R200 000.

With time running out for the talented forward to make an overseas move, having won just about every trophy and accolade on offer in South Africa, the former Ajax Cape Town player and his representatives may well also hold on for an offer from Europe.

Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane revealed in December last year that he was confident that Billiat would sign a new deal with the Pretoria-based side and remain at Chloorkop.

"I think Khama will renew (contract with Sundowns) in my belief, because he knows that we need him and he knows that we love him," Mosimane said at the time.

"He knows that if he is not going to get that biggest contract somewhere else, he must stay here.

"But if he gets the biggest contract, you’ve got to understand football is a short career.

"If he gets all this money that people promise him, why not (let him go), he knows."

Billiat has featured in only seven of the Brazilians' 17 league matches this term.
