Johannesburg - Percy Tau rescued a point for Mamelodi Sundowns in their 1-1 draw with SuperSport United at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Thabo Mnyamane handed SuperSport the lead against the run of play with a classy finish before Tau popped up late on to stroke home from inside the box.

It was a cagey start from both sides with Themba Zwane first with a chance for Downs with a shot that he pulled wide.

Thapelo Morena was unable to rescue the next chance at the far post with his effort saved by Ronwen Williams after Khama Billiat had failed to properly connect to his shot from a Tau ball.

And despite pegging SuperSport back for much of the opening exchanges, Eric Tinkler's side were soon ahead as Mnyamane stroked the ball into the bottom-right corner of the net, having picked up a ball over the top from Richard Boateng and racing forward.

Tau was prevented from getting a shot away with 15 minutes on the clock after being set up by Billiat, before Tau hit a 35th minute free-kick into a SuperSport defensive wall.

Williams then expertly kept saved Zwane's powerful header at his back post following a superb ball from Tebogo Langerman.

Morgan Gould fired off target on the volley on the stroke of half-time while second-half Sundowns substitute Sibusiso Vilakazi, on for Billiat, skimmed the crossbar with a rasping drive shortly after the restart.

Gaston Sirino hit an upright with a 58th minute free-kick as Sundowns sensed a way back into this game before Evans Rusike also hit a post with Denis Onyango beaten.

Sirino continued to look lively, but saw his goalbound shot blocked with 75 minutes played, however, the goal the visitors were looking for soon arrived following a set-piece.

Hlompho Kekana chipped a delightful ball into the SuperSport box, and after brining the ball down, Tau had time to pick his spot and smashed the ball into the back of the net.

Clayton Daniels may have won the match for United in the dying minutes but he was denied by Onyango from close range ahead of the final whistle to conclude another entertaining Tshwane Derby.
