Cape Town - After resigning from Cape Town City FC, SuperSport United have unveiled Eric Tinkler as the club's new head coach.

The 46-year-old spent less than 12 months in the Mother City, as he guided the Citizens - in their maiden season in top flight football - to a Telkom Knockout Cup title and a third-place finish in the Absa Premiership.

SuperSport CEO Stanley Matthews admitted the club are excited to have secured the services of Tinkler and believes the former Bafana Bafana captain has shown great potential at City as a head coach.

"We are excited about Eric taking the team forward. He has earned his stripes as an international player and as a coach, he has a fantastic track record of both building young players and being fiercely competitive within the PSL," said Matthews in statement released.

"By qualifying for a variety of domestic and continental Cup finals, he has shown his potential to be one of the great South African coaches of the future."

City confirmed that Matsatsantsa triggered Tinkler's buyout clause as he opted to make the switch from Cape Town to Pretoria.

With Stuart Baxter accepting the Bafana Bafana job, United have been working around the clock to get a replacement, with Ruud Krol and Roger de Sa both linked with filling the void.

However, Baxter has one match left in SuperSport's technical area and he will hope to end his tenure at the club with a winners medal.

Baxter will lead SuperSport for the final time against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, June 24 in the Nedbank Cup final.

A victory for either side will ensure their place in next year's edition of the CAF Confederations Cup.
