Cape Town - Orlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler has been assured that he retains the backing of the club following a meeting with chairman Irvin Khoza.

Tinkler is under severe pressure to get his side back on track, having seen his side slump to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Jomo Cosmos at the weekend.

The defeat to Cosmos sees the Buccaneers languishing in 11th place in the Absa Premiership standings ahead of Saturday's crunch clash with Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs, who are in fourth place with 25 points from 15 games.

“For us we had a meeting with him [Tinkler] and we reassured him the support,” said Khoza as quoted by KickOff.

“Not only him [Tinkler] but the whole technical team because this is not only about the coach himself but everybody who is involved in the team because when there is an assessment to be made we do that assessment for everybody.

“But for now we are saying let us give him the support and make sure that we soldier on because we know that we provide excitement in the country and therefore people are expecting us to do better. So we hope that things will turn.”

Pirates have recorded just one victory in their last five league fixtures, a 2-0 triumph over University of Pretoria on 13 January.

Meanwhile, Tinkler's side take on Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, January 30.

Kick-off is at 15:30.
