Cape Town - Puleng Tlolane scored a first-half brace to see Polokwane City defeat lower league side African All Stars 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday and advance into the second round of the Nedbank Cup.
On a day where fellow PSL campaigners Chippa United were upset by a second-tier team in the shape of Baroka FC and Mamelodi Sundowns were taken to extra time by Highlands Park [with the game unfinished at the time of writing], Rise and Shine were able to book their place in the last 16 of the competition.
Polokwane coach Julio Leal rang the changes for this cup match, with defender Carlington Nyadombo the only man who played in their last outing, a 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs on February 23.
Rise and Shine took control of the match early on and established a 2-0 lead within the opening 20 minutes, as Puleng Tlolane scored two well-taken goals. The striker enjoyed a superb campaign in front of goal in 2014/15 and City supporters will hope this double signals a return to top form.
All Stars, who hail from the Gauteng stream of the ABC Motsepe League, looked to get themselves back in the game but were unable to match their top flight opponents on the day.
Yet being able to hold a PSL team goalless through the second half was a respectable achievement for All Stars, who made their debut in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup in this match.
Polokwane have matched their best showing in the Nedbank Cup by reaching the last 16, a feat they achieved in 2013.
