Cape Town - Bidvest Wits returned to the summit of the Absa Premiership log with a 5-0 win over Polokwane City at Bidvest Stadium on Friday night.

English striker James Keene was the hero for the Clever Boys, scoring a ‘perfect’ hat-trick (one goal each with his left foot, head and right foot), while youngster Paseka Sekese and midfielder Ben Motshwari also got their names on the score sheet after coming off the substitutes’ bench.

Wits almost opened the scoring as early as the second minute, with Thulani Hlatshwayo heading wide of the target from Phumlani Ntshangase’s cross.

The home side only had to wait a further 15 minutes before they claimed the lead, with striker James Keene stealing the ball off Carlington Nyadombo in the penalty area before finishing with his left foot to make it 2-0.

Polokwane were twice denied an equaliser in the 25th minute, with goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs first saving from a Jabu Maluleke free kick before tipping over a close-range shot from Esau Kanyenda just seconds later.

Just before the half hour mark the Clever Boys doubled their advantage: Daine Klate provided an inch-perfect cross from the left flank and an unmarked Keene scored his second with a stooping header.

Klate came close to making it 3-0 within 10 minutes of the start of the second half, but his low drive from the left channel was well saved at his near post by City goalkeeper George Chigova.

Just past the hour mark Keene completed his hat-trick, taking advantage of some poor defending at a corner kick from the visitors to sweep the ball home at close range with his right foot.

Wits made it 4-0 with a beautiful team goal in the 79th minute, as Keene and Sibusiso Vilakazi combined to give substitute Paseka Sekese an easy finish, while Ben Motshwari scored his team’s fifth in injury time to wrap up an emphatic victory for Gavin Hunt’s team.
