Twitter heats up during SWC

Cape Town It is a growing trend that cannot be stopped! Twitter is taking over the Soccer World Cup and you can't afford to miss out.

Soccer fans (and even those who claim to dislike the beautiful game) are swapping televisions for smart phones and laptops as people across the world continue to bash out millions of tweets every game.

The Dailymail report that over 8.9 million, that's 8 900 000 million, tweets were sent during the Brazil v Mexico game last night. And that was during a 0-0 draw.

Here are some more facts regarding Twitter and the SWC:

1. Brazil v Mexico was the second most-tweeted match of the tournament so far. Hashtag that!
2. The opening game between Brazil and Croatia was the most tweeted.

3. England and Italy’s recent World Cup clash saw a total of 7.2 million tweets being sent throughout the game. 219,637 of those were when Daniel Sturridge scored for England.

Heat maps have now been created to show location of tweeters during games.

It makes for fascinating viewing. View the images here.

Here is how the key moments in the match unfolded.
