Brisbane - On the fifth day of the Australian Open warm up, defending champion Roger Federer finally opened his season at the Brisbane International and dispatched German qualifier Tobias Kamke 6-2, 6-1.

Federer advanced to a quarterfinal against Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Viktor Troicki 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-2 earlier Thursday.

The 17-time major winner converted five of his six breakpoint chances and saved the only one he faced, finding his touch quickly in his first competitive match of 2016, and dispelling pre-match rumours that he might be carrying an injury.

Milos Raonic, last year's runner-up, was also back in action for the first time this season, and defeated Croatia's Ivan Dodig 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-4. He set up a quarterfinal against Lucas Pouille, who upset sixth-seeded David Goffin 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3.
