Cape Town - Rising South African tennis star Lloyd Harris has been named as an alternate for this week’s Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, Italy.

Harris, who on Monday moved up to a career-high of No 110 on the ATP Rankings, has been rewarded for his form after lifting two ATP Challenger titles in 2018 - the Kentucky Bank Championships in Lexington and Stockton Challenger in California.

The prestigious 21-and-under event starts on Tuesday and runs until Sunday.

The world’s top eight next generation stars will be battling for title honours but should any of them be injured or ill and can’t continue with the tournament, Harris will step in as the alternate.

Meanwhile, the country’s top tennis ace Kevin Anderson maintained his ranking of No 6 in the world rankings after reaching a round of 16 at the Paris Masters last week where he lost to world No 9 Kei Nishikori from Japan in straight sets.

Doubles specialist, Raven Klaasen, impressed at the Paris Masters with partner Michael Venus from New Zealand, reaching the quarter-finals

The last eight showing moved Klaasen up five spots up to No 13 in the double’s rankings.

Both Klaasen and Anderson will be competing in next week’s ATP Finals in London - the year-end climax to the ATP World Tour season.

The event features only the world's best eight qualified singles players and doubles teams.

On the women’s side, Chanel Simmonds remains the highest ranked South African singles (No 368) and doubles (No 249) player.
