Cape Town - Andy Murray booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters while Stan Wawrinka crashed out on Thursday.

The second seed wasted no time in dispatching Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-1, 6-3 on the hard courts of the Chinese city.

Murray enjoyed a near flawless match, never facing a break point while breaking the dangerous 13th seed serve four times.

The Brit raced to 5-0 lead in the opening set before Pouille finally held, saving one set point in the process.

In the second set, Murray earned the early break and moved to 3-1 lead, which he held until he broke Pouille again in the final game of the match.

The win books Murray a date in the final eight with Belgian David Goffin. The 11th seed battled back from a set down to defeat the in-form Gael Monfils 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Wawrinka's run in Shanghai came to an end following a straight set 6-4, 6-4 loss to the unseeded Gilles Simon.

The Frenchman would battle back from 3-1 down in the opening set to level matters at 3-all before one final break gave him the lead. A hapless Wawrinka could only watch as Simon served out the set.

While the pair swapped breaks early in the second, Simon would clinch the fifth game on his second break point and ride out the set to a memorable win.
