South African Kevin Anderson advanced to the second round at Indian Wells after defeating Australian Jordan Thompson in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round in California.

The world No 69 will next face Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the next round on Sunday.

Anderson's fellow countryman Lloyd Harris, who has been in sensational form in 2021, faces world No 32 Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on the same day.

In the men's doubles, Harris and his partner Diego Schwartzman were knocked out by 6-2, 7-6, 10-7 by Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson.
