Rugby Australia officials raised a few eyebrows earlier this week when they proposed a Super 8 series featuring teams from New Zealand, South Africa, Japan and Argentina.

The governing body suggested a four-week tournament, with the top two Super Rugby teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, and the leading one from Japan's Top League and South America's domestic tournament.

It would follow either a domestic Super Rugby competition, as is currently the case Down Under, or a trans-Tasman one from 2021.
