The Proteas, thanks to the Covid-19 climate, have selected a larger than normal squad of 21 for three Tests against India over December and January.

And while that depth gives head coach Mark Boucher and skipper Dean Elgar plenty of options from top to bottom, when one contemplates what a starting XI might look like on 26 December at Centurion, presuming there are no injuries, there are naturally some certainties.

Elgar and Aiden Markram will open the batting, for example. Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma will be in the middle-order. Quinton de Kock will keep wicket.
