Cape Town - Gary Kirsten is set for a return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being linked to a role on the Royal Challengers Bangalore's coaching staff.

Kirsten is currently in Australia, where he is making his coaching debut in this year's Big Bash League for the Hobart Hurricanes.

According to Cricinfo's website, it is unclear in what capacity Kirsten will join the Royal Challengers as current head coach, Daniel Vettori, is reportedly staying on.

The most likely role for the former Proteas coach and star opener is as batting coach.

In 2013, Kirsten was appointed as Delhi Daredevils coach on a three-year deal, but was shown the door after just two seasons in charge.

Under Kirsten's tutelage, the Daredevils won only seven of 28 matches, with 20 defeats and one 'no result' in those two seasons.

The Daredevils finished last in the 2014 IPL edition and second from bottom in 2015.

Kirsten played 101 Tests for the Proteas, scoring 7 289 runs at an average of 45.27.

Kirsten is highly regarded in India, having coached the subcontinent side to the Cricket World Cup title on home soil in 2011.
