As the Indian Premier League gears up for a new season in 2022, Protea fast bowler, Anrich Nortje is the only South African player retained by his franchise.

Each of the current franchises could hold onto four players with a maximum of three Indian players, two overseas players and two uncapped Indian players allowed.

Nortje, who plays for the Delhi Capitals, was one of four players kept by thi year's losing finalist along with Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel and Prithvi Shaw.

Nortje's fellow speedster, Kagiso Rabada was not retained by the Capitals.

Neither were Faf du Plessis, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir (all Chennai Super Kings), Chris Morris, David Miller, Tabraiz Shamsi (all Rajasthan Royals), Quinton de Kock and Marco Jansen (both Mumbai Indians).

AB de Villers, who turned out for the Royal Challengers Bangalore announced his retirement from all cricket in November.

Those players who were not retained by their franchises will now have a chance to be selected by other franchises during the player auction in January.

Two new teams will join the eight existing ones for IPL 2022.

The tournament will consist of 74 encounters with each team playing seven home and seven away matches.
