Cape Town - Australian captain Steve Smith was in the runs in Sheffield Shield action this week, signalling a return to form ahead of three Tests against South Africa in November.

Smith made one century in his side's 5-0 ODI series loss to South Africa recently but failed in his other four innings in the series.

But any thoughts that he was not at his best were completely squashed on Tuesday when he carded a knock of 117 for New South Wales against Queensland.

Smith hit 18 boundaries in his 164-ball stay at the crease and Australian coach Darren Lehmann would have been delighted to see his skipper going big.

Australian opener David Warner was out for 12 for NSW, while Usman Khawaja made 79 for Queensland.

This match has also seen Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood opening the bowling together for NSW in what is largely expected to be the new ball attack for the Aussies at the WACA on November 3.
