De Kock: No competition with Hash

Cape Town - Proteas opener Quinton de Kock does not feel like he is in direct competition with Hashim Amla for an opening slot at this month’s ICC World Twenty20 in India.

With the Proteas management having suggested in recent weeks that AB de Villiers will open the batting at the tournament alongside one of either De Kock or Amla, it appears to be a straight shoot-out between the pair for a place in the starting XI.

But a relaxed De Kock didn’t see it that way on Tuesday.

“Either way ... whoever gets into that position will their best and what’s needed for the team,” De Kock said.

“We’re trying to win a World Cup here for once.

“There’s not much competition between me and him ... no beef, nothing like that.”

Asked whether or not he was open to a move down the order to accommodate Amla up top, De Kock hadn’t given it much thought.

“I don’t know ... we’ll see how things go. I haven’t been there in a while,” he said.

“If it comes my way then so be it ... I’ll try and get the job done.”

De Kock has returned scores of 44 (28 balls) and 7 (8) in the two T20Is he has played against Australia this series, while Amla posted scores of 69* (38) and 22 (21) in the two matches he played against England.

The third and final T20I against Australia takes place in Cape Town on Wednesday evening (18:00) with the series locked at 1-1.
