Dean Elgar is uncomplicated and feisty enough to make one not question his motives, but there can be little doubt that the Proteas Test team arriving in Australia for a three-match Test series will be moulded by him.
He made that abundantly clear in a media engagement before the team's departure on Thursday when he quite freely highlighted his involvement in various aspects of the preparation for this trip.
Elgar lobbied Enoch Nkwe, Cricket South Africa's director of cricket, to appoint Malibongwe Maketa as the interim coach, quipping that the outcome proved he "did something right".
