Cape Town - Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis says that there will be no ego contest between Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson and himself leading up to the first Test in Dunedin.

Du Plessis admits that he had observed the on-field captaincy battle between Virat Kohli and Steve Smith in the second Test in Bengaluru, which saw the two skippers going at each other - as India won the Test match by 75 runs.

When asked whether the same intensity will be shown against Williamson in the three-Test series, Du Plessis denied any animosity towards the Kiwi skipper saying that they're both "pretty chilled".

"Kane and I have similar personalities, there won't be thoo much of a battle going on there - ego wise," Du Plessis told reporters on Tuesday.

"It's more when you play guys that try and act like they want to run the show that's when the captains can have a bit of an ego contest on the field," said Du Plessis.

"But not with the two of us, we're pretty chilled in the same way, but it's just about getting the best out of our team - if we can do that in our own way then that's what's important."

"I've seen it (footage of Kohli and Smith). It looks like a great battle at the moment, but that style of captaincy is obviously different (to ours)," said Du Plessis.

The first Test between New Zealand and South Africa gets underway on Tuesday (24:00 SA time).
