Cape Town - Faf du Plessis sent Ottis Gibson an appreciation message after the West Indian was relieved from his role as Proteas coach on Sunday.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that Gibson, along with his entire coaching staff, have been let go and a new management structure will be put in place for the national side.

Proteas: The sudden death of the head coach position

Du Plessis, who was the Proteas captain in all three formats under Gibson, took to social media to show his gratitude to the former national team mentor.

The Proteas skipper tweeted: "@MrODGibson gonna miss you coach.

"Have spent a lot of time together over the last 18 months and you become a friend of mine. You are a great man.

"Thank you for everything that you have done. We appreciate you."

The Proteas will have an interim team director at the helm when they tour India in October with acting Director of Cricket, Corrie van Zyl, tasked with finding a suitable replacement for Gibson.
