Brilliant Bavuma, 'Killer' Miller sensationally guide Proteas to series-clinching win over England

He’s back.

Following a year of myriad disappointments and challenges, Temba Bavuma seems to have found his touch again in the most emphatic fashion.

The Proteas skipper was precise and relentless in scoring his third ODI ton – arguably his best at international level - to spearhead a sensational five-wicket victory in the 2nd ODI against England at the Mangaung Oval.

Most importantly, it clinches an early series win with one outing in Kimberley to go on Wednesday and means South Africa keep automatic qualifications for the World Cup in their own hands.

In front of an excellent crowd of 11 864, Bavuma never looked in trouble as he attacked the visitors with panache, seldom resorting to a stroke in anger though his pick-up pull for six off Reece Topley was special.

In all, he stroked 14 boundaries for a magnificent 109 off 102, vividly illustrating that he can score at a rapid tempo in a format he boasts very good stats in.

He was out trying to play an elaborate leg side flick, but had been struggling with cramp and took the calculated gamble of getting bigger strikers to the crease.

On an excellent surface under a baking hot sun, it proved the correct decision.

The whole of the middle order contributed, with Aiden Markram also suggesting he’s regaining form with a fluent 42-ball 49, which was only ended when he played around a superb Adil Rashid (2/72) googly.

But it was David ‘Killer’ who was the hero at the death again, keeping the tempo up with a 35-ball fifty and expertly marshalling the powerful but at times nervy Marco Jansen.

Once they whittled down the equation to a run-a-ball, the game was never in doubt really.

Miller appropriately ended the match with a sumptuous loft over mid-off for six.

The Proteas’ batting will have to fire on all cylinders after wily England’s wily band of stroke-makers powered their way to a colossal 342/7.

Visiting skpper Jos Buttler was the mainstay of the effort, crafting a brilliant 94 off just 82 deliveries that was notable for how serenely it was compiled.

Curbing the more brutal side of his game, the 32-year-old was compact and nifty, which was made possible for him by the men around him taking on the big-hitting duties. 23-year-old Harry Brook - after making a duck on his debut on Friday - confirmed his rich promise with an eye-catching 80 off 73.

It wasn’t a faultless innings by any stretch of the imagination as he was lucky to get away with several streaky glides and edges.

In between, though, he was muscular and ruthless, particularly on the on-side.

Moeen Ali also drew on all his experience in his 45-ball 51, a crisp knock truly ignited England’s charge.

Sam Curran’s explosiveness was the final factor in taking the wind out of the Proteas’ sails.

Armed with a bowling attack that featured three changes, including Friday’s Man of the Match Sisanda Magala, the South Africans made a deceptively good start as Lungi Ngidi and Wayne Parnell both removed an opener each.

However, when Quinton de Kock had to be taken to hospital in the 15th over for an X-Ray on a sore thumb while keeping to Anrich Nortje, the tide seemed to turn.

The scan showed no fracture, though and he did play his part in getting the hosts off to a good start.

Jansen (1/66) and Keshav Maharaj (1/51), two of the changes, were ineffectual, with Jansen, in particular, struggling for consistency.

Yet it was Ngidi, who seemed an inspired selection initially, who eventually suffered the most, losing the plot in his last two overs in conceding 38 runs.

Rubbing salt in the wound, the Proteas look certain to be fined Super League points for their slow over rate, but it should be soothed over by the match points.

The Proteas’ batting will have to fire on all cylinders after England’s wily band of stroke-makers powered their way to a colossal 342/7 in the 2nd ODI at the Mangaung Oval on Sunday.

Visiting skipper Jos Buttler was the mainstay of the effort, crafting a brilliant 94 off just 82 deliveries that was notable for how serenely it was compiled.

Curbing the more brutal side of his game, the 32-year-old was compact and nifty, which was made possible for him by the men around him taking on the big-hitting duties. 23-year-old Harry Brook – after making a duck on his debut on Friday – confirmed his rich promise with an eye-catching 80 off 73.

It wasn’t a faultless innings by any stretch of the imagination, as he was lucky to get away with several streaky glides and edges.

He is been performing in T20 and Test cricket, this is a great start for his ODI cricket. We have come here to win games of cricket, but the bigger picture is building to that World Cup. Wednesday will be another chance for us to execute our plans. Very special. Always a tough ask against England. This was a good way to test our way of playing. To chase down 340 like that, gives us a lot of confidence. Really enjoyable for me today, it is good I am making myself valuable. We were pretty relaxed with David and Marco still there, it needed something miraculous for us to lose the game. We dominated the first 10 overs with the ball, and they felt the intensity. Our ending not as good perhaps. With the bat, it was about understanding the conditions well and using it to our advantage.
