When 21-year-old Marco Jansen was picked for the first Test against India at Centurion on Boxing Day, there were more than a few eyebrows raised.

Skipper Dean Elgar acknowledged at the toss that it was a surprise selection, but the more significant talking point on the lips of the South African cricket public was: "Where is Duanne Olivier?".

Had Olivier not had a bout with Covid and a niggle, he would almost certainly have played that Test with Jansen left out, but it is in these moments in elite sport where opportunities unexpectedly arise.
