Cape Town - Coach Russell Domingo has confirmed that former Proteas batsman Neil McKenzie will join the national team as a batting consultant on a short-term basis.

Domingo was speaking at a press conference in Cape Town on Wednesday, ahead of his team’s opening T20 international against England at Newlands on Friday.

McKenzie starts in his role on Wednesday and will stay with the team until the completion of next month's ICC World Twenty20 Cup in India.

Domingo said that McKenzie's involvement with the national set-up would be re-assessed after the tournament.

"It’s great to have him on board. It’s been something that we’ve been trying to do for a long time now," said Domingo.

"We’ve explored a few options and finally one guy has committed to us and we’re ecstatic that he’s joining us.

"Neil’s played a lot of Test cricket, ODI cricket and T20 cricket both locally and overseas. I think the main thing with the Neil is the relationship that he’s able to develop with players.

"As a coach that is one of the most crucial things… being able to get people to understand and listen to some knowledge you may have on a particular skill."

McKenzie, 40, retired last month from top-level cricket and played in the recently-concluded Masters Champions League in Dubai.
