The absence of veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir, the continuation of uncertainty over the South African future of champion Essex "offie" Simon Harmer... these have been key aggravators, if you like.

But the fact remains that the Proteas have what currently looks like an unprecedented imbalance in their squad spin department: all five of their primary options in looming white-ball combat against England are of the left-arm variety.

The tourists arrived in Cape Town this week to go into their bio-bubble for the three-Twenty20 and three-ODI series, with four matches scheduled at Newlands and two at Boland Park in Paarl.
